Brief Program Description
|
The six-week summer program is divided into two academic
programs, one for grades 7-9 and the other for
grades 10-12.
The younger students take courses designed to broaden their knowledge
as well as motivate them to learn. Examples of
these courses include English, mathematics, science,
computers, Spanish and Values.
The older students attend SAT preparation classes to build vocabulary
skills, reading comprehension, mathematical and
problem solving skills and test-taking strategies.
The upper class students also attend a regular
Northeastern college level course. The course is
designed to help motivate students to learn study
skills.
Balfour staff members meet with the students
in recitation sessions to discuss the class and
help students learn to take notes, understand the
readings, and study for tests.
In addition to academics, the summer program also provides an athletic
program to teach skills, teamwork, leadership,
and sportsmanship. Activities include football,
basketball, swimming, track, soccer, and softball.
Friday field trips include the annual Balfour Olympics,
waterslides in New Hampshire and barbecues on the
Cape.
