The STEM Fellows program targets 40 middle school and early high school mathematics, science and technology teachers in eight school districts to discuss classroom applications of engineering and career pathways in STEM fields. Engineering pathways mapping project will organize available career and educational options to a guide book of coherent engineering/technician pathways for parents, guidance counselors, teachers, and students to better inform career and college choices; three engineering/technology career fairs will also be held. Two new summer camps will be created to increase students' awareness of STEM careers. Six Saturday Explorations in Science and Engineering will combine hands-on activities, lab work and visits to labs. Three summer content and pedagogy institutes and two academic-year seminars will be held for K-12 and high school teachers.

Project INVENTION facilitates project-based, real work-related activities for teachers and students mentored by industry and higher education. The Advanced Studies and Leadership Program provides project-driven content instruction in STEM subjects during a 4-week summer residential program for 8th and 9th grade, high-achieving students from districts in the Cape Cod Collaborative. Three previously approved but wait-listed schools will receive assistance from the MassBioEd Lab Awards to remodel and refit science laboratories.

 



Additional STEM Projects

Phase II of the Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative (CITI) continues the collaborative effort among the Massachusetts public higher education system to address improvements in computer science programs and to integrate information technology across the curriculum.
UMass Amherst (lead partner)

K-6 Technology/Engineering Tie-In Lessons. Originally funded by the Intel Foundation, this project develops technology and engineering units in the elementary science curriculum and professional development for teachers. Partners: Museum of Science, Boston (lead partner); Boston Public Schools; Fall River Public Schools; Framingham Public Schools and Hudson Public Schools.

STEM High School Internship Planning Grant will develop a statewide internship program for high school students and promote the program for national funding. Metro South/West REB (lead partner); Boston PIC, Metro North REB, Greater New Bedford WIB, Hampden County REB, and Berkshire County REB.
